Creating accessibility and improving energy performance were key goals of the project. To optimize complex interior spaces for learning, the design team at Cushing Terrell partnered with the State Historic Preservation Office on a sensitive solution: replacing the existing south stair tower with a new stair/elevator core. Featuring metal panels from ATAS International, Inc. to form an aluminum curtain wall and a solar-heated, perforated metal elevator shaft, the addition reveals historic architecture while reducing HVAC energy use.
