School Construction Trending Towards Metal

By: John Ryan, Metal Construction Association

My daughter just started kindergarten this fall, and picking her up from school each day often reminds me of my days in grammar school. The brick-walled schools that I attended years ago are still in use today (they seemed so much bigger back then), and still providing students with a great environment in which to learn.

But just as I am reminded that every year I am getting older, there are reminders that the country’s thousands of school buildings are aging, too. Many are being replaced with new, state-of-the-art schools, and many more are being retrofitted to make them current with the latest education, technology and energy standards.

And with more frequency than in the past, those familiar brick walls are being upgraded and replaced with new, energy-efficient metal walls and roofs. Take, for instance, the Metal Construction Association’s newest case study on the William Allen High School in Allentown, PA. The school—originally constructed with brick masonry—had outgrown its existing space, so they built a new addition on an adjacent lot. The exterior of the new building is a combination of brick and metal panels, with the majority of wall surfaces being insulated metal panels (IMPs).

The metal complements the brick aesthetically—a trend that we are seeing more and more of—and it helped the new building attain LEED gold certification. Not only are the IMPs energy-efficient, but the added benefit of quick installation (IMPs allowed the building to be enclosed with insulation and the finished panel in one shot) made them an ideal choice for this project.

Check out our case study library for additional examples of how schools—new and old—are making use of metal walls and roofs.

Retro Metal Is Always “In”

No, we’re not referring to retro metal music like Kiss or Quiet Riot. We’re talking about retrofitting buildings with metal roofs and metal walls.

No matter the age or style of building, retrofitting with metal can offer many benefits, including potential long-term savings, design flexibility, sustainability and energy efficiency. Building Operating Management magazine recently published a four-part feature article focusing on the many benefits of retrofitting with metal. The article offers a wealth of information and features insights from several Metal Construction Association member companies.

Stainless Steel: A Cool Option for Building Exteriors

Airports with stainless steel roofs help with cooling efficiencyFred Nolan of NOW Specialties Inc.

Recently The Metal Initiative sat down with Jim Halliday of Contrarian Metal Resources, to discuss the solar reflectivity of stainless steel, and its many applications in the building envelope.

TMI: You recently reminded us of something we all seem to know intuitively: that stainless steel has a very low thermal conductivity.  Continue reading Stainless Steel: A Cool Option for Building Exteriors →

Meet the “Overall Excellence” Chairman’s Award Winner

As mentioned in our last post, over the coming weeks we’ll be introducing more information and articles about the Metal Construction Association’s Chairman’s Awards winners. The natural place to start is with the “Overall Excellence” winner: the Chihuahua’s Businessmen Foundation (FECHAC) Regional Office in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

We’ve just posted a new case study about the project that provides more details about how the design process unfolded, and how the architects overcame obstacles to achieve the design that best suited their client’s needs and represented their client’s values. The Metal Initiative offers a library of more than 60 case studies featuring many inspiring project that reflect the benefits of building with metal.

The MCA judging panel chose this project  because it incorporates metal into many parts of the building. They were fascinated by the architects’ ability to use metal to represent rock. Lights on the building were incorporated to make the metal look different in summer and in winter.

Reynobond Composite Aluminum Panels from Alcoa Architectural Products were used in the design. The architect for the project is Grupo ARKHOS.

Be Inspired By the 2012 Chairman’s Award Recipients

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) and The Metal Initiative had a productive week last week at METALCON International in Rosemont, IL. METALCON is the premier event for the metal design and construction industry, and MCA is proud to sponsor this event each year.

Each year at METALCON MCA unveils the Chairman’s Awards, which are given to some of the most innovative and creative projects involving MCA member companies. Want to be inspired by some amazing designs featuring metal walls and roofs? Take a few minutes to read more about the winners and view the video featuring the nine winners from 2012.

And keep coming back to the blog or to the metal building case studies over the coming weeks and months for more inspiring information about each of the 2012 Chairman’s Award recipients.

Kingspan’s Role in Energy-Efficiency Program Elevates Entire Metal Construction Industry

Paul Bertram Jr., Kingspan Insulated Panels, Inc.

As you may know, Kingspan Insulated Panels is one of five private-sector companies, and the only metal building company, involved in a new federal initiative to improve industrial energy efficiency. The Better Buildings, Better Plants program aims to improve energy intensity (an economic indicator of energy efficiency) by 25% over 10 years.

I believe that Kingspan’s participation in this program elevates the visibility of the entire metal construction industry. It highlights our commitment to energy-efficient building technology that performs on par with or better than traditional envelope systems that serve green building and net-zero energy development. The program will:

  • Provide assistance to plants to help their operations meet prescribed energy-efficiency goals, such as net-zero energy
  • Support plant operations that establish and analyze key energy-use data and metrics used to develop baselines and energy-management plans
  • Recognize the insulated metal panel (IMP) as an accepted energy-conservation solution that provides thermally optimized building envelopes
  • Demonstrate to building owners the potential energy cost savings and return on investment achieved with optimized building envelopes. This marks a path toward net-zero.

It is clear that the federal government is interested in anything that saves energy. We all need to think about energy efficiency—whether through solar reflectance and cool roofing or insulation and air barriers. Our industry is leading the way in addressing national and global energy challenges, as seen by Kingspan’s commitment to finding ways of using our own products to save even more energy in the future.

Paul Bertram Jr., FCSI CDT LEED AP, is director of environment and sustainability at Kingspan Insulated Panels, Inc., based in Deland, FL.

The New Ivy Covered Walls

by Ted S. Miller, Miller Clapperton

When you hear the term “ivy covered walls” your mind almost automatically shifts to a university campus, with masonry buildings in collegiate gothic style with ivy expanding up the walls surrounding a grassed quadrangle.  Can’t you smell a grill cooking meat for the tailgating party before the football game?

I have visited two (2) university campuses this week and I can report to you that much of the new construction on these campuses has a new feature element and it is not ivy on masonry anymore.  What I have seen is attractive uses of metal, sometimes the entire wall in metal but most commonly metal walls are being used as the featured element of the building.
